Why this petition matters

Started by Daily Mirror

Max Johnson is nine and he needs a new heart. The only thing keeping him alive is a mechanical pump fitted inside his tiny chest. This cannot last forever. He and his family face a race against time to find a donor who can give him the most precious gift – life.

10,000 people in Britain need an organ transplant, including 182 children. 1,000 die every year waiting for the second chance that never came.

We can do more to help them.

At the moment, adults who want to donate their organs after death have to opt in through the donor card system. The Mirror is calling for a change in the law which would mean consent was presumed – unless someone opts out.

Wales already has an opt out system. Scotland now plans to do the same. We believe England and Northern Ireland should change the law too and give patients like Max the best chance to survive.
