Few may remember NBC’s short-lived Prime Suspect reboot but many, however, will recall the fedora that Maria Bello famously sported throughout the series. And that seems to have struck a chord with The Expanse star Thomas Jane.
The drama, based on James S.A. Corey‘s Leviathan Wakes book series, is described as a thriller set 200 years in the future and follows the case of a missing young woman who brings a hardened detective (Jane) and a rogue ship’s captain together in a race across the solar system to expose the greatest conspiracy in human history.
Ahead of its panel Thursday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, Syfy screened the trailer for its upcoming space drama in which Jane stars as the world-weary Miller, a native of “the Asteroid Belt” between Mars and Jupiter. Miller is a detective for a corporate security force operating as the law in the Belt. Ragged, in search of something even he can’t identify, Miller remains a dedicated cop with great instincts who discovers a newfound sense of purpose when he’s put in charge of the investigation into a missing heiress.
And in every clip of the trailer (seen above), Jane’s beleaguered detective — like Bello’s Prime Suspect NYPD cop — sports a fedora.
“It’s a film noir storyline, at least the way I see it,” Jane told reporters with his trademark smirk. “It’s that future noir thing, which is a great word — you guys should all write that down.”
“The fedora is a classic,” Jane told THR after the panel, noting that he personally selected it. “We felt like it would be a fun combination in the futuristic world. There’s certainly no other fedoras in that world except for Miller’s. There’s a story behind the fedora, which we learn later on in the season. But it was a touchstone to create the guy and a nod to the antecedence of his character. He wears it quite a bit.”
For those who don’t recall, Bello’s distracting fedora became the central point of a line of questioning at TCA in 2011 when the actress defended her character’s trademark hat. “I feel like … this is who Jane is. For me, it’s Jane Timoney,” she said at the time of her character, whose fedora spawned its own meme.
