Former Pacific University football coach and basketball official Frank Buckiewicz dies at 87

A funeral mass will be held for former Pacific University football coach and NCAA basketball official Frank Buckiewicz Saturday, Sept. 23, 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Forest Grove.

Buckiewicz died last week. He was 87.

He coached the Boxers from 1965 to 1980, guiding Pacific to an 8-1 season in 1972. He also served as Pacific athletic director.

Before moving to the college level, Buckiewicz coached Grant High School from 1960-65 and led the Generals to PIL titles in 1963 and 1964. His 1963 team was co-state champion with North Salem.

He officiated college basketball games for many years, and was a fixture in Pac-8 and Pac-10 games until his retirement in 1981. Buckiewicz officiated in the 1979 Final Four that concluded with a title game matching Magic Johnson and Michigan State against Larry Bird and Indiana State.

He is a member of the both the PIL Hall of Fame and Pacific University Athletic Department Hall of Fame.
