McCalla man killed after SUV drops from I-459, then hit by train; 1 of 2 fatal Bessemer crashes Sunday

Two men were killed in separate traffic crashes in Bessemer on Sunday, including a man whose SUV wrecked, and was then hit by a train.

Authorities said a motorist - an adult male from McCalla - was traveling north on Interstate 459 when his Chevrolet Tahoe left the roadway and went down an embankment between the northbound and southbound lanes. He was pulling a boat, and came to rest on railroad tracks near McAdory School Road, said Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates.

Investigators aren't sure what time the victim's vehicle wrecked, but shortly before midnight a Norfolk Southern train struck the boat, causing the victim to be ejected from the SUV. He was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:51 p.m.

The victim's wife was notified shortly before 8 a.m., so authorities are withholding his name until later today.

Earlier Sunday, a 27-year-old Hueytown man was also killed in a traffic accident. The coroner's office identified him as Jared Norman Jones.

Yates said details on that crash are limited, but it happened at Academy Drive and Powder Plant Road. Police were dispatched to the scene at 5:28 a.m. and arrived to find Jones had been thrown from the vehicle. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:10 p.m.

Both crashes remain under investigation by Bessemer police.
