MEN’S CD CHAMPS. Lyrden Laborte (2nd from left) and partner Dexter Opalla (3rd from left) beat Charles Marigomen and Peter Tan in three bruising sets to bag the premier Men’s Doubles CD crown in last Saturday’s MSBC Summer Badminton Tournament.

Dexter Opalla and partner Lyrden Laborte of Team Racquetzone survived a bruising, three-set battle against Charles Marigomen and Peter Tan Saturday night to capture the premier Men’s Doubles Level C/D crown in the 2016 Metrosports Summer Badminton Tournament at the Metrosports Center in Lahug.

Opalla and Laborte took the first set after two deuces, 23-21, but Marigomen and Tan forged a tense winner-take-all decider after winning the second, 21-19 by focussing their attack on the diminutive Laborte.

However, Marigomen and Tan’s strategy of drowning the small framed Laborte proved futile in the third set as the incoming Grade 8 student unleashed his defensive genius and alternated with Opalla in scoring kills for an easy, 21-16 victory.

Opalla and Laborte pocketed P2,500 and medals while Marigomen and Tan took home P1,500 and medals.

Meanwhile, Dr. Karina Tecson and Carl Bernard Bejasa of Team Racquetzone topped the Mixed Doubles Level E, beating Ivan Badian and Alfred Alivio of Bohol. Also Bas Ouano and Joe James Taboada won the Men’s Doubles E title after downing Gersam Lopez and Gerard Cosicol while UC High School varsity players Mary and Jill won the women’s plum after nipping former varsity players Hazel Libato and Joan Francisco in the finals.
