THE Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has formally issued Southwestern University (SWU) a Government Recognition for the university’s Doctor of Medicine program.

In a statement issued by Chito Salazar, SWU president, the recognition is a full recognition effective academic year 2015-2016 which allows the university to accept freshmen and allows their students to graduate this same year of 2015-2016.

“Therefore, the seniors, who finished this April 2016, do not need to worry about their SO’s (Special Order)”, Salazar said in his issued statement.

An SO number shows that the graduation is authenticated or approved by CHED.

Godwin Denzil Manginsay, vice president for external and legal affairs, said the government recognition was issued on April 27, 2016.

With the recognition, Manginsay said presently enrolled students need not worry about the legitimacy of their studies.

Manginsay said that they, however, still need to inform the Bureau of Immigration, all the embassies and consulates, and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (Faimer) as soon as possible about CHED’s recognition.

“We are just preparing our official statement and cover letters and the furnishing copy of the GR, so they will have a peace of mind that students who will be coming here are coming to a school that is recognized by CHED,” Manginsay added.

Foreign student from Nigeria Linus Etete, an incoming intern, said that they are still thankful to CHED for recognizing their school.

Presently, SWU has 60 foreign medical students from first year to fourth year, approximately 600 enrolled students and there will be around 160 incoming interns.

SWU, formerly known as Southwestern Colleges, was founded by Don Matias H. Aznar in 1946. It has been offering the medical program leading to the degree of Doctor of Medicine since 1951.

Phinma took over the university last month, after completing on May 6 the acquisition of 56.83 percent of the school’s total outstanding capital.
