The Best, Most Underrated Vacation Destinations

It's important to take time away from it all sometimes, but the usual tourist traps and popular destinations come with their own flavor of stress best avoided if you're trying to kick back and recharge. Let's build a list of alternative, underrated vacation spots and options worth considering instead.

When most of us think vacation, we probably consider a trip to the beach, maybe a family-friendly theme park, or a cross-country road trip to visit family or get away from it all. Still, those options generally come with crowds, cost, and their own special kind of stress. Let's talk about some ways we can still make the most of our vacation time without stressing ourselves out just to get away from it all.

We have some destinations and ideas of our own, and we'll share them in the discussions below, but instead of just throwing a list of items together, we want you to share your favorite vacation spots and ideas with us too, on the same terms. Here's how to format your recommendation:

  1. Include a picture! Anything to add a little visual interest, especially if it's actually of the location or idea you're suggesting.

  2. One vacation idea per comment please! Let's keep it simple and easy to read—if you have multiples, and we hope you do, add them as separate comments!

  3. Try not to repeat vacation tips! If you see someone who's already suggested your favorite, click the star and reply to their comment to give them a boost!

  4. Tell us why this is a great vacation idea! Maybe it's fairly uncrowded. Maybe it's just a lot of fun, or it's budget-friendly. Maybe it's just more fulfilling than a walk through a theme park or overpriced souvenirs. Whatever it is, let's hear it!

So then, let's begin. We'll get you started, but we're really interested in yours, so fire away!
