LIVE REACTION: England are BOOED OFF at Wembley after failing to score against superb Scotland with spoils shared at Euro 2020... but should Raheem Sterling have won late penalty for THIS tackle?

The most notable fixture in Group D has arrived, as England and Scotland renew their historic rivalry in a fiercely important clash tonight.

The pair first played all the way back in 1872, in what is recognised as the oldest international fixture in history.

After comfortably winning their opening fixture 1-0 against Croatia, England come into the match knowing that a win will guarantee them a spot in the last-16.

Scotland, on the other hand, are under pressure after their disappointing defeat by the Czech Republic, and with Croatia to come in their final group encounter, it's crucial they get off the mark tonight.

And that's a wrap

Thanks kindly for your company.

So, a point apiece for these sides. Scotland taking huge heart, and England's confidence has no doubt plummeted.

Croatia next for Scotland, while England go up against Czech Republic on Tuesday evening.

See you there!

22:30
Former Scotland captain Scott Brown

Scotland were great, they worked hard together and pressed together as a team.

They frustrated England and particularly in midfield, Billy Gilmour, McGregor and McGinn worked extremely hard.

England looked leggy, struggled to break through lines , but Steve Clarke got his tactics spot on today.

22:28
Southgate faces the music

Here's what the England boss had to say to ITV:

I think it was a frustrating night, we know we can play better. Got to give Scotland credit they defended valiantly and played well.

We didn't do enough to win the game but after that the thing we have to worry about in tournament football after that is we had to make sure we didn't lose it. We know it's a disappointment for our supporters, but we have to dust ourselves down and move on."

On bringing Harry Kane off: "We needed more runs in behind, I felt Marcus Rashford would give us that energy, at that point we had got to try and get the. We have to make these decisions based on what we see.

"The whole team can look at ourselves, that starts with me, we've got to be better. We didn't do enough to win the game tonight, not enough attempts on goal, we have to go away and look at that.

On selections: "We're still working those patterns, we're playing a high level of games under the intensity and to find space tonight was difficult. Scotland played well and we weren't able to open them up.

"I know exactly where this team is - it's a young team and some of them won't have experienced a night under this intensity and pressure, that's a huge learning for then. That's what we have to look at moving forward.

22:22
Scotland captain Andy Robertson
I thought we did (deserved more than a point) I don't think many people can argue that we had the big chances at times we kept the ball superbly well, frustrated them and on another night we could have come away with more.

But we'll take a point it keeps us alive, but it's important we use this feeling and have the fans with us on Tuesday and try and get a positive result to get us through this group.

(On Billy Gilmour) My god right up there. I spoke to him earlier today and just looked at him and to be fair nothing phases him. That's why I think he can have as many caps as he wants for Scotland, he's got a huge future ahead of him.

Him and McGregor in the holding role were brilliant.

Look, Harry (Kane) is one of the constant players you need to keep a watch on but there was a few of them, Foden got substituted as well and we kept him quiet. Sterling was quite quiet.

The boys came on, the whole crowd was lifted when Jack Grealish came on but the right hand side managed to keep him quiet. Credit to all the boys, a real good result, important it's not a pointless point and we try and use it to get out of this group.
22:17
Kane 'doesn't look fit'

22:15
Ian Wright left 'embarrassed'

He (Kane) doesn't look at his best. You look at the chances created, Reece James coming into the team one of the best crossers in his position hardly any crosses.

Not enough balls into the last third. Why does he take Phil Foden off for? There's no way he should be leaving the pitch today, that's disappointing to see today for me.

Someone like Jadon Sancho on the bench, 16 goals and 20 assists this season didn't even get on and we needed to create.

You can talk about Harry Kane and the chances he could have had and the touches he didn't have, but at the same time do we create enough? We're a team that should be one of the favourites to win this tournament but I was embarrassed for us today.

22:13
G.Neville on England

Is it too big for those lads, those that played?

Maybe it's the biggest game they've played, it was built up in the media.

In every single department - maybe apart from the goalkeeper - Scotland were better.

It was an absolutely lacklustre display for such a big game

22:00
Kane praises Scotland

Kane could barely be heard during his interviews, as boos rang out at Wembley, mixed in which passionate Scottish chants.

He said: 'I think it was a fair result. Scotland defended really well and had a few chances. It wasn't our best performances.

On being substituted: 'It's part of the game, the manager makes decisions which are best for the team, it is what it is.

'I think it was just a tough game.'

21:57
Keane on Scotland

'You've got to give Scotland huge credit - whatever they lacked in quality they made up for in desire and hunger to get this point'

21:56
Souness on Scotland

'They played here with style, polish and composure. I think they were fabulous throughout.

It wasn't just about battling they played football, composed, came here after a performance result low on confidence and played with a bit of style and polish.

I Was worried in second half after their first-half efforts and thought it might dip but they stuck with it and it's a great point for them. They weren't lucky they thoroughly deserved that.

21:50
FULL-TIME: ENGLAND 0-0 SCOTLAND

That's it! The ref blows and an undercurrent of boos can be heard at Wembley.

The Scots have dug in and deserve this! A war of attrition and a very important point gained.

The first ever 0-0 draw at Wembley between these two teams.

21:49
Goalmouth scramble!

90' - England just couldn't get it in!

Rice flicks it to James, who gives it him back inside the area.

The West Ham man is piled out by the goalkeeper AND John McGinn, as McTominay also surges in. All hands to the pump.

The ball squirms out to Sterling, but there are too many bodies in the way for him to do anything with it. Scotland scramble it away.

Terrifying times for the visitors...

21:47
TWO minutes of stoppage time to play
21:44
Booked: O'Donnell

Hacks down Grealish, very cynical.

Happily takes the yellow card.

21:42
Scotland sub

Che Adams is making way, perhaps still regretful about those chances.

Kevin Nisbet comes on, five minutes of regular time left to play!

21:40
81'

Huge tackle from Hanley!

Marcus Rashford looks to have the beating of the Scotland centre-back but Hanley recovers to make an inch-perfect challenge on the edge of the area and blocks the ball away.

Desire and experience going in hand-in-hand there.

21:36
Penalty shout!!!

This could be interesting! Sterling wants a penalty after being nibbled by Andy Robertson on the edge of the area.

VAR doesn't even look at it. Robertson looked to have tripped the City man, but he made a meal of it.

The game plays on.

21:35
77'

Che Adams blazes over!

Robertson crossed from the left, the ball ran through and found Adams at the far post.

He gets far too excited and lashes his foot through the ball and it's high into the stands.

He looks gutted.

21:33
75' Scotland sub

Southampton's Stuart Armstrong is on in place of Billy Gilmour. A solid first international start for the Chelsea youngster.

21:32
England sub

A few surprised faces as captain Harry Kane goes off. To be fair, it's a good call - he's looked off the pace this evening.

Marcus Rashford is on in his place, taking the position at the tip of the attacking line.

21:31
73'

Link-up on the left between Mount and Shaw sets the Manchester United man through.

He pulls off the volley and attempts to slice across goal in search of the far post, but the angle is off.

It goes behind. Scotland breathe a sigh of relief.

21:29
70'

Scotland backroom team in conversation on the touchline, with manager Steve Clarke having an in-depth chat with Steven Reid.

Looks like they'll be rolling the dice very soon and making the next move.

On the England bench, Rashford is getting prepped.

21:23
65'

Grealish straight into the thick of it, and wins a corner after showing some nimble footwork on the left.

Mount takes it again, to the near post, and it fails to reach Rice.

England seem to have worked on something which relies on a good near-post delivery... but it really looks like they shouldn't be bothering.

21:21
63' England sub

Phil Foden goes off and a huge roar goes up as Jack Grealish joins the action.

21:20
OFF THE LINE!

Reece James denies Lyndon Dykes on the line with a last ditch header!

These are tense times for England, and it's hotting up now massively.

Dykes had volleyed from the edge of the area and it was bypassing everyone. It was, perhaps, going marginally wide, but James absolutely had to be there.

England caught napping.

21:18
59'

Mount rallies the crowd as England win a corner.

It's the Chelsea man who fires it in and Mings screams for a penalty after claiming he was pulled to the ground - it's ignored.

Scotland break... England clear... England break again. This game is breathless.

Sterling ends up in a position where he's racing towards three defenders, before looking up and trying to pick out Foden - but the pass is poor and its turned away.

21:15
56'

Let off for England as Scotland advance and the ball is flicked from Dykes to Adams, and almost falls to the feet of the big striker inside the area.

He stumbles, and England can thump it clear. That would have been a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

England counter and Kane is pulled back by Gilmour. A free-kick is lofted into the area but Scotland deal with it.

21:13
55'

Reece James blazes over!

Sighs and groans all around Wembley, the Chelsea man should have done better.

Kane found him across the area with a low, zipping pass across the surface.

James controls it with one touch and puts his laces through it, but it's over the bar.

21:07
Grealish getting suited and booted

The cameras pan onto Grealish who laces up his boots. He tries his best to hide a smile.

He'll be the first sub introduced in this match.

21:06
CHANCE!

Mount cuts in from the left as we've seen so many times before, and unleashes and effort. It's deflected behind.

England take the corner quickly and aim for Foden at the near post, whose flick on is handled well by Marshall in goal.

21:04
Roy Keane not happy with John Stones

Remember that early header from Stones which clattered the post? Well, Keane certainly wasn't happy about it!

He said in the ITV studio: 'You've got to read the flight of the ball, he has to score. Not great movement, little shimmy and free header. He has to do better, he's close enough has enough contact, not good enough.

England to have all the quality in the world but to play without urgency and pace. Gareth won't be a happy man.'

21:02
SECOND-HALF UNDER WAY
21:02
Carragher's verdict

Speaking to the Telegraph, the former Liverpool man has given his verdict:

Scotland have been excellent. They have mixed up their play well, passing short in midfield when necessary and on occasion going long to Lyndon Dykes.

If anything, I think they could go direct even more. Dykes has caused problems to John Stones, winning the aerial battle numerous times.

Southgate was right to change the full-backs. This is a full-backs game for England. The problem they have had is getting them into the game.

Could we see Phil Foden coming inside far more, making the extra man in the centre? I think Southgate might also be thinking of bringing on Jack Grealish.

Maybe Mason Mount can drop deeper in midfield, allowing Grealish to play in the pockets.

20:47
HALF-TIME: ENGLAND 0-0 SCOTLAND

And that's that for the first 45. No added time, the ref blows as soon as time is up.

A gritty first half in the rain for both sides, with no real fluency.

Still, you feel there is plenty to come in the second 45. Remember, there has never been a 0-0 draw between these two teams...

20:46
44'

Adams' shot behind took a deflection, it seems.

Robertson whips in a corner but it's far too deep and England deal with it easily enough.

20:45
43'

Scotland finishing the half well with sustained build up.

Not posing much of a threat, but they're in around England's area.

Mings comes out to pressure Che Adams, who resorts to shooting from range. It's wide.

Mings is not at all happy about the closing down though - or lack thereof - and gives Mount a real earful.

20:38
36'

The rain keeps filtering down and it's leaving a slick on the surface.

Mason Mount presses Kieran Tierney at the back and gives away a freekick.

As Scotland attempt to break away, Adams holds up possession before looking to shift it out to the right flank ... but hoofs it out of play.

20:37
34'

Lovely darting feet from Foden, who dances through the defence and is put down by Hanley. The ref says no free-kick.

Boos, predictably, erupt from the stands.

England are feeding the ball through more now, but Kane is a bit of a worry - he's struggling to get into this game much like he did against Croatia...

20:32
29'

A HUGE hand from Pickford to deny Stephen O'Donnell on the volley.

Cross from the left, volleyed back across on the right. Slick play from the Scots but fortunately for England the 'keeper is equal to it.

He will take some serious confidence from that!

20:30
28'

Reece James crosses and Harry Kane is literally inches away from the diving header.

It may even have glanced him, but he can't put it goal-bound.

A fantastic cross and a great run from Kane, playing off the defender's shoulder.

20:25
23'

Scotland manage to steady the ship and hold possession for a few minutes consecutively... to be greeted by loud boos from the England fans inside Wembley.

This rivalry is still as strong as ever.

20:19
CHANCE!

17' - Foden almost finds the bottom corner. He would have been offside, so he wouldn't have counted.

He was picked out with a sublime searching ball over the top, and the control was sublime.

England are finding cracks in the Scotland back line now.

20:17
BOOKED: McGinn

First yellow of the match and it's McGinn for dissent.

A foul was given in favour of his fellow Aston Villa man Mings, but he wasn't having any of it and let the ref know exactly what he thought.

20:14
CHANCE!

Mount now goes close!

Sterling slots the ball in from the left and Mount has a chance at the near post, but sends it wide.

England are up and racing now, 12 minutes played.

20:13
POST!

Mount curls it in and John Stones is up with a brilliant header!

He's completely unmarked, and shows great athleticism to get up and at it.

Full neck muscles behind the attempt, but it crashes off the post from point-blank range!

20:12
10'

England fashion an opportunity and the ball falls to Mount on the edge.

He shapes up, fashions some space and unleashes. It's blocked behind from a corner.

20:10
8'

Scotland send in a freekick from the left with Robertson and Mings rises highest to nod it clear. England breathe again.

A fast-paced start, with both teams clearly fancying this...

20:06
CHANCE!

Scotland go close!

O'Donnell pulls the ball across from the right flank and Che Adams is unmarked inside the area.

He pivots and hits the ball first time - slightly scuffed - but Pickford saves.

A let off for the home team!

20:04
3'

Plenty of noise roaring down from the stands.

A cautious opening from both sides, Dykes has already clattered into a few challenges.

Kalvin Phillips has just been held off by Grant Hanley after making a bursting run.

The rain has started to pour again.

20:01
KICK-OFF!

Here we go!

Both teams took the knee together prior to the whistle.

Now we're under way at Wembley  - as Scotland kick-off.

19:57
Anthem time!

Flower of Scotland ringing out at Wembley!

God save the Queen next up, and then it's time for the action!

Make that final cup of tea now - we're ready to go.

19:48
TEN minutes to go

Kick-off fast approaching.

Wembley is roaring and the rain has - momentarily - stopped.

Both teams now concluding the warm-up and the stage is set!

19:21
This will take some cleaning...

The remnants of Leicester Square after a day full of boozing and singing.

19:16
KICK-OFF COUNTDOWN: 45 MINUTES TO GO!

Tension building.

Which way are you thinking this game is going to go?

19:06
Nerves creeping in for Kammy...
18:59
Shilton roaring on the Lions

Very predictable.

Let the rivalry begin!

18:46
TEAM NEWS: SCOTLAND

And here's what Scotland are serving up!

As reportedly exclusively by Sportsmail, Billy Gilmour gets his first start.

Kieran Tierney is back and this time Che Adams starts for the Scots, alongside Lyndon Dykes up front.

18:38
TEAM NEWS: ENGLAND!

The team is out! Here are tonight's Three Lions.

Reece James and Luke Shaw are in, as Gareth Southgate rings the changes.

Ben White, Bukayo Saka and Kyle Walker are out of the squad. Two goalkeepers on the bench...

Good on you, chaps

A group of Scotland fans have been seen clearing away litter from the remains of today's party antics at Leicester Square.

Always nice to see.

18:31
The Maguire family are ready!

Harry Maguire could be in line for making his England comeback tonight, and his loved ones will be watching on in the thick of it.

The sister of the Manchester United captain, Daisy, has uploaded a photo showing the family ready and waiting to watch Maguire and the Three Lions from Boxpark Wembley.

The scenes if he scores a header will be... incredible.

18:24
Wembley way filling up

It's going to be a hectic one, and spirits are high.

Croatia are level!

An absolute textbook classic from Ivan Perisic has put Croatia level against the Czech Republic.

Plenty to play for, with just  55 minutes on the clock.

This is... awkward

Some nice news, football royalty Sir Alex Ferguson is in attendance tonight.

Some awkward news, football royalty Sir Alex Ferguson has been denied entrance to Wembley's VIP car park.

The former Manchester United manager has been left red-faced, and some stewards have been taking their job far too seriously.

18:03
Gilmour starts!

CRAIG HOPE: Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour is set to win his first Scotland start against England at Wembley.

Sportsmail understand that boss Steve Clarke is ready to spring a surprise by including the 20-year-old from the off.

Gilmour was uncapped when called up to Scotland’s Euro 2020 squad last month, since earning two caps as a substitute.

But Clarke is set to put his faith in the ball-playing schemer when the Scots bid for their first points of Euro 2020 against Gareth Southgate’s men.

The visitors are also likely to start with Southampton’s Che Adams in attack, while Kieran Tierney will return to the defence after recovering from injury.

17:43
Slick Schick... again

For those who aren't currently watching the other fixture in the group tonight, the Czech Republic have taken the lead against Croatia.

It's that man Patrick Schick again... and, it's that man Dejan Lovren who has given away a penalty and allowed the opponents to go ahead.

It's shrouded in controversy though, and lots of questions are being asked. Follow all of the action below!

17:40
Great news for all football fans

Evoking nostalgia?

This fixture always brings up the memories of yesteryear, football heritage and all that.

Anyway, ahead of tonight's huge match a few of the England lads have linked up with Dettol to recreate some of the most iconic celebration of times gone by.

Take a look...

17:07
Visitors being well received
17:01
No sun? No problem...

Listen, this fixture doesn't come around often - let alone in an international tournament - so the Scots are making the most of every single second.

The weather today in London has been terrible. Cold? Well, not exactly. But wet? Absolutely.

The rain has been pouring but that hasn't stopped Scotland fans in their thousands milling around the English capital, singing songs and staying plentifully hydrated with an assortment of beverages.

Tournament football is great, isn't it?

16:45
REPORT: Sweden on the brink of last-16 place

Jack Gaughan: Slovakia deserve this, the jeopardy of a final game shootout. A refusal to play cost them dear against a team who, for so long, appeared to have no chance of scoring.

Sweden did in the end, via an Emil Forsberg penalty 13 minutes from time, which opens this group up and now applies gentle pressure on Spain.

There was only one team really bothered about forcing a result towards the end of this and perhaps the Slovaks will look back and rue how this panned out.

They barely left their own half until the eventual winner, happy to sit on the point that would surely have taken them through.

Sweden beat Slovakia

Furious MPs blast 'deeply irresponsible' UEFA for threatening to strip the UK of Euro 2020

UEFA was hammered by MPs today for its 'deeply irresponsible' threat to move the Euro 2020 final out of the UK unless its VIPs are allowed to skip Covid quarantine.

Uefa has threatened to move the prestige game and the two semi-finals from Wembley to Budapest unless some 2,500 bigwigs are given preferential treatment that would allow them to jet in to attend.

And ministers are understood to be looking at ways to accommodate the extraordinary demand ahead of the game on July 11.

It prompted a ferocious backlash this morning, coming just days after Freedom Day was postponed for four weeks due to a surge in Indian variant cases.

That looks like it's going to be sore

Scotland fans are continuing to make themselves heard in central London as they get ready for tonight's encounter.

The conditions are not ideal for a day of drinking and partying but some Scotland fans are unfazed by the weather.

Including this guy...

15:07
Afternoon everyone

Thanks Dan, afternoon everyone!

We're closing in on kick off at Wembley now but let's quickly look at the game that is currently ongoing in St Petersburg.

The second half between Sweden and Slovakia has just started but it's been an awful game so far. Very little to get excited about with both teams offering very little in possession.

15:02
Early change ahead of the game....

Five hours to go until kick-off but we are making a change here at DM Towers as I pass live blog duties onto MAX WINTERS as we edge closer to kick off. Take it away Max...

14:59

Former England defender MARTIN KEOWN looks at there this crucial Group D encounter could be won and lost...

14:48

It's not quite the Battle of Bannockburn or Falkirk, but Scotland look like they have the West End of London conquered... 1-0 already?

14:34
Would this fan have saved Czech Republic's 50-yard goal on Monday?

Here is some context of the 50-yard goal from Patrick Schick for Czech Republic if you need it, which resulted in Scotland keeper David Marshall racing back in vain to avoid being lobbed in their 2-0 defeat in their opening group game.

I'm not too sure the alternative on display at Wembley here is that much better but it's nice to have options I guess.

14:21

DOMINIC KING: Football's landscape has changed since the days of the Home Championship and those annual skirmishes but, even still, England-Scotland is a dramatic fixture that will always have the power to make heroes. Dalglish should know: he scored one of its most famous goals.

14:06

And Che Adams is not alone among the Scotland team set to feature tonight who have English roots...

13:54

Granted, this Euro 2020 clash does not quite have the gravitas of England vs Scotland. But you don't need to wait six hours until kick-off for this one - in fact it gets underway in just over five minutes so join Sportsmail's JORDAN SEWARD for all the action from the Group C encounter in St Petersburg.

13:49

We've had some England team news already, but Scotland could also be boosted with the return of Arsenal star Kieran Tierney at full-back. The big question is though whether he has the capacity to go the full 90 minutes this evening...

13:32
Meanwhile in Leicester Square...

Got to hand it those Scotland fans. Leicester Square is one of those hubs in London where it seems manic 24/7. But Scottish supporters in a party mood are making a usual Friday evening (pre pandemic at least) look like a relaxing experience. I hope they have saved enough in the tank for Wembley later.

13:15

Of course it's not just Scotland fans getting into the atmosphere of this game, streets are decked out in the flag of St George, while one tattoo artist is on the 'it's coming home' train.

Although to me he has not quite finished the job... I hope that is not an omen for this European Championship.

13:03

Harry Kane was a bit quiet in the 1-0 win over Croatia, but dropping him now for the clash against Scotland would be madness as Sportsmail's chief sports writer MARTIN SAMUEL explains...

12:55
Let's check in on what's on the line sporting wise this evening...

It's easy to get caught up on the occasion of 'England vs Scotland' alone and forget what is actually on the line.

'Derby' pressure aside, England have a cushion heading into the game after their opening win over Croatia, and a victory at Wembley would book them a spot in the last-16.

Scotland are not quite in must-win territory yet but after a 2-0 loss by the Czech Republic they can ill afford another defeat.

Should they fall again against Gareth Southgate's men and Croatia don't beat the Czechs this afternoon, they will be staring elimination in the face heading into their final group game, hoping three points against Croatia (and maybe a padded goal difference) could see them progress as one of the best teams finishing their group in third place.

12:45
Former England star Paul Ince is backing a 2-0 victory over Scotland

Paul Ince featured in England's 2-0 win over Scotland just over 25 years ago at Euro '96 (you may have heard some references to it recently), and the former Manchester United midfielder is predicting a similar result this evening.

'England were superb for 20 minutes against Croatia, after that it was a professional job', he told Paddy Power. 'England must raise their game, though I can’t see us losing. It will be a repeat of the result in Euro 96: England 2 Scotland 0.

'Raheem Sterling is a player that English fans pick out for criticism, but he's always been very good for England, and it was great to see him get his goal against Croatia. I fancy Sterling to score again, with Harry Kane getting the other goal.”

'Scotland need something from this game. If they lose, they’re out of the tournament. There were such high hopes for Scotland’s squad, they’ve got brilliant players like Andy Robertson and Scott McTominay. They’re good enough to qualify for the next stage, but they’ve got to get past England first, which is tough. '

Paul Ince has backed Raheem Sterling (left) and Harry Kane (right) to fire England to a 2-0 win
12:35

Mind you, some fans have already gone a bit too wild ahead of the game in way of their choice of refreshments. This particular incident could have been a lot worse...

12:29
Meanwhile we have had a fresh batch of Scots arriving in London
