Airman from N.J. base fatally struck by subway train ID'd as Texas man

JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST -- The Air Force airman who was struck and killed by a New York City subway train on Sunday has been identified as a 25-year-old from Texas.

Airman 1st Class Montiel Alleyne, of San Antonio, Texas, was an aerial port apprentice assigned to the 621st Contingency Response Squadron at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

"We mourn the loss of A1C Alleyne, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends," said Lt. Col. Richard Kind, commander of the 621st CRS. "Tragedies like this are felt across the entire squadron, and he will be greatly missed by his fellow airman and teammates."

The NYPD says Alleyne was on the tracks about 400 yards from the 14th Street-Union Square station. He was hit by a northbound Q train at around 4:30 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

It was not immediately known why he was in the tunnel, but the incident remains under investigation.
