Everything We Know About 'Wonder Woman 2,' So Far

Patty Jenkins is officially on board for "Wonder Woman 2."

Variety reports that the director has closed a deal to helm the sequel, which is slated for release on December 13, 2019.

She was already working on the script with DC film exec Geoff Johns, but until now it was not guaranteed that she would be directing the next Wonder Woman film, despite the first film's massive success with critics and at the box office.

"Wonder Woman 2" will hit theaters on December 13, 2019, Warner Bros. announced on Tuesday, but the studio has not yet confirmed director Patty Jenkins' return, which is likely.

"Wonder Woman 2" will take place in the 1980s during The Cold War, according to Screenrant, which reported that the sequel will send Gal Gadot's beloved superhero character against the forces of the Soviet Union in some capacity, much like the German army in World War I played a villainous role in the first.

And according to TheWrap, which confirmed Screenrant's report, Chris Pine's contract gives Warner Bros. the option to bring him back, though it's probably safe to say his role would be significantly reduced considering how "Wonder Woman" ended.

We knew "Wonder Woman 2" was pretty much a guarantee even before it dominated the box office two weeks in a row, but now details about the sequel are starting to drizzle out of the mouths of those involved with the blockbuster franchise.

In an interview published Tuesday in Variety, Warner Bros. President and Chief Content Office Toby Emmerich said Gal Gadot's next solo adventure as Wonder Woman won't take place during World War I, like the current movie in theaters, but will still take place in the past.

"It will take place somewhere between 1917 and 2017," Emmerich said.

Back in April, "Wonder Woman" director Patty Jenkins told Entertainment Weekly that the sequel will take place on U.S. soil.

"The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right," she said. "She's Wonder Woman. She's got to come to America. It's time."

Meanwhile, in a separate Variety interview, Geoff Johns -- the man who oversees the studio's entire DC Extended Universe alongside Jon Berg -- said he's currently writing the treatment with Jenkins, but did not confirm if she's coming back to direct.

"The goal is to make another great 'Wonder Woman' film. I had a blast making it with Patty the first time. We've got a cool idea for the second one," Johns said.

Unlike Gadot, the female filmmaker did not have an automatic option to return for the sequel in her contract upon signing on to make the first film. But according to The Hollywood Reporter, negotiations will be underway shortly, if they're not already.
