A gold wedding band or college ring isn’t risky, especially when done in moderation; it can be a bold style statement that’s still not over-the-top. But a gold watch is something else entirely. It takes careful selection, the ability to match other style accoutrements and the ability to restrain oneself. By gold most people mean yellow gold, which is unalloyed.

And then there’s the distinctive rose gold – which is gold mixed with copper, and hence more pinkish in color – timepiece that’s a step in a more stylish direction while still remaining a class act when done properly. It’s definitely the more popular option these days. Wear rose gold when you can tastefully match accessories, either with grey, tan or black suiting or with tan, pastel or white business casual wear. But unless you really know what you’re doing, gold doesn’t go with t-shirts and shorts.

Another option, albeit a less popular option for men’s watches than it is for women’s watches, is white gold. White gold is an alloy of traditional yellow gold. It’s made up of pure gold, mixed with alloy metals that have a silver-white color. These typically include palladium and silver.

“A gold watch used to be considered tacky, but these days it’s a smart style move,” Paul Altieri, founder of online luxury watch retailer Bob’s Watches and one of the world’s top Rolex collectors, tells AskMen.

“They have traditionally been a sign of wealth — kings and presidents have always worn them — and that association still applies for most people. So wearing a gold watch is a statement of success and a status symbol, and they have more ‘sex appeal’ than [a stainless steel case]. A gold watch hints of the backs of limousines and penthouse apartments. Not a bad look at all if you can pull it off.”

“Gold watches show their versatility from being the flashiest of accessories to a study in subtleness,” notes David Lee, general manager of Watches at StockX, the live “bid/ask” marketplace backed by Eminem and Mark Wahlberg.

“There is nothing quite as satisfying to feel the gravitas from the weight of a gold timepiece. At more than double the density of stainless steel, it is easy to tell if a solid gold watch, especially with a solid gold bracelet, is real or not, simply by the weight. But after you have the watch on, you can just feel the importance of the timepiece.”

Which brings us to the difference between real gold and “gold tone.” Real gold is the precious metal that’s been prized since time immemorial. It can be gold plated or simply solid, and is usually 18 karat (a unit of purity). Gold tone is essentially a finish applied to stainless steel or some other material. Even if plated the actual amount of gold used is so little that it can’t be measured in karats. Anyone who’s familiar with actual gold jewelry can likely tell the difference at a glance.

Hence, you should expect to pay more for a proper gold watch. If you can’t afford real gold, you probably shouldn’t be trying to buy one. But if it’s really just the gold look you’re after and you don’t care about anything else, check out the less expensive pieces on the list we’ve compiled.
