The next time someone walks up to you on the street and asks to borrow your phone, don’t let them, say police.

Chicopee police are warning folks about a cellphone scam in which people approach someone with a “sob story” and ask to use their phone. The scammer then runs off with the phone. The scam is happening in other communities as well, according to the Chicopee Police Department.

“If someone approaches you and asks to use your phone, because of these recent larcenies, decline,” said Officer Michael Wilk with the Chicopee Police Department.

Wilk says the thieves are “preying on good, decent people only trying to help.”
