How Easton Area schools plan to address bullying issues

The Easton Area School Board will vote Tuesday on a districtwide anti-bullying policy.

The board approved the policy after its first reading in October. If the board approves it Tuesday, the policy will go into place.

The policy compels teachers to intervene if they know about verbal, physical, relational, psychological or cyber bullying. The policy also requires students to report bullying when they find out about it.

Students who bully others will be subject to counseling, peer mediation, a parent/guardian conference, detention, suspension or other consequences.

If someone sends a bullying text message off-campus that has an effect on a student in school, that texter could be subject to discipline under the policy.

The identity of victims and those who report bullying will be kept confidential as per federal law.

The school board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the district education center, 1801 Bushkill Drive, Forks Township.
