Manchester United defender Paddy McNair has been released from hospital in Helsinki after spending three nights there with a ruptured liver.

McNair suffered the injury during Northern Ireland's 1-1 Euro 2016 qualifier draw in Finland on Sunday.

The 20-year-old stayed behind to receive treatment and is expected to be able to return to action after two weeks' rest.

The Northern Ireland doctor remained with McNair while he had tests.

Manchester United medical staff did not travel to the Finnish capital but will now assess the player.

There is not expected to be a further update from Old Trafford until manager Louis van Gaal addresses the media on Friday before his side's Premier League game at Everton.
