High school baseball player killed in 'freak' accident

A freak accident has killed at high school baseball player in south Georgia.

14-year old Colton Shaw, a junior varsity player for Valdosta High School, wasn’t even on the field when he was hit in the head with a ball.  Shaw was in the dugout Wednesday during a game in Moultrie against Colquitt County when he was struck after a bad throw.

He was flown to a hospital in Tallahassee, Florida, in critical condition.  The Valdosta Daily Times reports Shaw died Thursday after his family took him off life support.  Rance Gillespie, the high school's athletic director, called the boy's death "a terrible loss to our school and our baseball program."

Colquitt County athletic trainer Ryan Kebler told The Moultrie Observer he rushed to Shaw's side after he got struck and fell. Kebler called the fatal throw "a freak thing."
