Florida man crashes car after fleeing traffic stop, police say

ELMWOOD PARK -- A Florida man crashed his car into a building Monday after fleeing a traffic stop, police said.

Stanley Meileur, 24, of Sunrise, Fla. (Bergen County Sheriff's Office)

Bergen County Sheriff's Officer Scott Emerson stopped a Nissan that failed to maintain its lane at about 3:28 a.m. on Route 80, Anthony Cureton, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said.

The driver, Stanley Meileur, 24, of Sunrise, Fla., drove away during the stop, nearly striking Emerson, Cureton said. After a short chase, the Nissan crashed into an apartment building on Boulevard in Elmwood Park.

Meileur ran but was caught quickly, Cureton said. He was arrested and charged with failure to stop, eluding, resisting arrest, aggravated assault and simple assault on a law enforcement officer and obstruction.

He was sent to Bergen County Jail and will be extradited to Florida for outstanding warrants there. Two passengers, Georgina Ellison, 24, of Elmwood Park, and Maryanne Beckford, 27, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., were charged with taking a vehicle without the consent of the owner.
