Canada’s CBC has returned to the foreign crime-drama well by acquiring ITV‘s Chasing Shadows for its midseason schedule.
The Reece Shearsmith-starrer about a maverick detective trying to find missing persons before serial killers murder them lands on the pubcaster’s 2015 schedule as the company continues to cut jobs and programming to balance its books. The CBC earlier acquired two Australian dramas, Secrets and Lies and Janet King, and the BBC and Sundance Channel spy thriller The Honorable Woman, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, after being faced with less government funding and no NHL game revenue this season.

The public broadcaster is dealing with the loss of revenue from Hockey Night in Canada telecasts after rival Rogers Media picked up the national NHL TV rights for $5.2 billion (US $4.9 billion) over 12 years from this season. The CBC also has taken an advertising revenue hit from poorly performing primetime shows in the 25-54 demo.
The Canadian network earlier announced midseason local series additions like the Eugene Levy-starring comedy Schitt’s Creek, the six-parter The Book of Negroes, which is to air on BET stateside, and the Donald Sutherland-starrer Pirate’s Passage.
