7 Tips for Choosing Beautiful Age-Appropriate Hair Accessories ...

By Eliza

Age-appropriate hair accessories are available everywhere the place, so it should be easy to find what you want. However, at the same time, there are loads of hair gadgets out there that are best left to younger generations. If you’re anything like me, you stand there in the hair stuff aisle and end up leaving with nothing because you just don’t know what is adult worthy and what will make you look like you’re still in elementary school. For the benefit of all of us, I’ve gathered these great tips for choosing age-appropriate hair accessories.

1

Go Small

There’s something about a huge bow on top of your head that won’t do you any favors and is definitely not one of the age-appropriate hair accessories I’m recommending. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear a bow though. I love to put a small ribbon bow at the end of a side braid or around my ponytail. It looks sophisticated and a little fun at the same time. So, go ahead and wear a bow in your hair. Just be sure to keep it understated and classy instead of huge and floppy.

2

Coordinate with Your Outfit

I’m not saying you have to be matchy-matchy, but it’s a good idea to be sure your hair accessories coordinate with what you’re wearing. That means the colors and patterns should meld well with what you’re wearing on your body so they don’t look out of place and strange. That doesn’t mean the same exact color, but simply something that is in the same color family or is a neutral.

3

Choose Comfortable

I love the way a headband looks, but they squeeze my head until I have a pounding headache. Most of the time I skip them even though they add so much to my hairstyle. As a grown up, you have so much going on that it doesn’t pay to wear something so uncomfortable you can’t stand it. Instead, opt for hair accessories that look great, but won’t leave you suffering until you remove them at the end of the day.

4

Opt for Simple

Sure, a first grader can probably get away with a huge neon barrette complete with dangles and beads, but you might not be so lucky. No matter how cute and fun a hair accessory is, it’s best for adults to choose something simple. That means a single flower on a bobby pin or a thin, sparkly headband. Even plain barrettes or pins are great for your grown up look.

5

Wear Them Alone

The best fashion experts strongly encourage you to go for one standout accessory and keep everything else subtle. So it’s fine to secure a ponytail elastic with a silk flower on it into your hair, but then you should stay away from huge earrings, scarves and statement necklaces. You’ll look sophisticated and elegant without appearing to have piled on every accessory in your closet.

Try Something New

If you’re new to accessorizing your hair, don’t be afraid to try something new. Maybe you don’t realize that those turquoise studded bobby pins are just the thing to glam up your standard ponytail or to hold your bangs back while you grow them out. Try new things to find what works best for your style. It’s so much fun to mix and match all the options!

7

Don’t Spend a Ton

One of the best tips I have for choosing hair accessories is to avoid spending a huge pile of cash. There are so many affordable options. That means having lots of choices at home without having to get a second job to fund your habit. You don’t have to choose bottom of the line, but you also don’t have to spend a week’s paycheck on one item.

Where Thoughts and Opinions Converge

Who cares about age appropriation,I'm sorry but we wear what you like,I'm a twenty nine year old woman and I love butterfly hairpins and clips,as long as their not too childish what really is the issue,if you like it,wear it

I don't think the size really dictates if it is age appropriate. Some people have a " younger " look also some people tend to look younger longer and I think dressing that up is great

Whilst I understand where the author is comming from - it is better to judge how the accessory works with the outfit and general look and attitude of the wearer - just look at Anna Della Russo!
