Iconic fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg has a lot of wisdom and experience to share with others, and during her appearance on Today (where she was accompanied by a DVF-wrapped Statue of Liberty replica) Diane offered up four important life lessons while discussing her recently published memoir, The Woman I Wanted to Be.

Diane's mother Liliane was one major force in her daughter's life who managed to beat the odds and survive the Holocaust in addition to giving birth to a healthy daughter—two things that seemed next to impossible at the time.

"As my mother is no longer here," Diane said. "I realized that actually that explains so much the woman that I am and the woman that I became."

Diane also stressed the importance of maintaining a sense of optimism during hard times.

"Life is a journey," she pointed out. "Some things are good, and some things are not good, but it's your life and you've just got to embrace it and live it."

Married to a prince at the age of 22, she seemingly had the fairy tale that most women could only dream of. But to Diane, there was so much more in life that she wanted—independence.

"Most fairy tales end with the girl marrying the prince and my fairy tale started there," Diane explained. ""I knew the kind of woman I wanted to be. I wanted to be independent, and I became independent."

The final life lesson she addressed was the topic of aging and why it's not a bad thing.

"The most important relationship you have in life is the one you have with yourself," she said. "The good thing about aging is that you have a past, and if you like your past then it means that you have lived fully."

Diane also unveiled the first of six mini replicas of the Statue of Liberty dressed in her signature prints. The other five statues are scattered around New York City.
