One dead after train hits pedestrian in Little Italy

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- An 18-year-old woman died Friday after an RTA rapid train hit her as she tried to climb up on the platform at the Little Italy-University Circle station, police and fire officials said.

The crash happened about 2:15 p.m. Friday at the station on Mayfield Road and East 119th Street.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was with a group of people passing out promotional flyers in the neighborhood, investigators said.

The group ran across the tracks and the woman was climbing onto the platform when an eastbound train hit her, police said.

The conductor told RTA officials that the person "appeared" on the tracks and that the driver had no time to react, according to RTA spokeswoman Linda Krecic said.

Krecic said investigators are reviewing the video of the crash to determine exactly what happened.
