Fishmas in Mono and Inyo Counties

A fresh Fishing Map will detail "top fishing destinations" around the water-fun area.

HOLIDAYS HAPPEN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, but few are as anticipated, and prepared for, and talked about among people who adore the Sierras and casting a line as... Fishmas. That's right, Fishmas is a much-anticipated occasion around Inyo and Mono Counties, which comprise a large swath of the Eastern Sierra region. And when you think of those majestic peaks, with all of their many rivers running down into the lowlands below, and you picture Convict Lake and June Lake, you start grokking to the notion that the pursuit of the picture-perfect day spent fishing is a pretty darn big deal. And so it is: The official kick-off to fishing season, which flaps a fin for the first time on Saturday, April 29, is indeed hailed as Fishmas, one of the gladdest days on the calendar. If you're heading up or over to Mono and Inyo Counties with your tackle box and waders in tow, best look up the...

BRAND-NEW FISHING MAP... that was created to direct people to "top fishing destinations" around the two counties. A quartet of regional powerhouses are behind the map — Mono and Inyo Counties, the Bishop Chamber of Commerce, and Mammoth Lakes Tourism — and interesting tidbits about various bodies of water are included (the pdf is here). And if you're anticipating some serious fishing action, thanks to all of that Sierra snow over the winter, you're feeling what others are feeling, too. "We are looking forward to the best opening day conditions since 2012, both in terms of the amount of fish being planted and the healthy water levels of our lakes," says Jeff Simpson, the economic development manager for Mono County. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife "..has planned 660,000 pounds in fish stocking allotments in Mono County and Inyo County, currently scheduled for every other week along with holidays and local events" reveals James Erdman, an environmental scientist with the CDFW.

CONVICT LAKE, ROCK CREEK, Saddlebag Lake, and Little Virginia Lakes are just a few of the spots that are "regularly stocked throughout fishing season." Gear up, place your tackle box by the carport door, and plan your fish-fun weekend up in the Eastern Sierra, once Fishmas arrives.
