Michelle Rodriguez has said that she could consider quitting Fast & Furious if it does not give its female stars more "love." The blockbuster action franchise is a global hit, but despite an ensemble cast, male stars such as Vin Diesel (Dom Toretto), Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Luke Hobbs), and Jason Statham (Deckard Shaw) take the most prominent roles.

Charlize Theron was introduced in the eighth Fast & Furious movie as the latest Big Bad, but Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto) was written out following Paul Walker's tragic death and Nathalie Emmanuel (Ramsey) was largely sidelined and didn't get an awful lot to do.

Elsa Pataky's character Elena Neves only existed to service Dom's storyline, while Dame Helen Mirren had a cameo as Deckard and Owen Shaw's mother.

Rodriguez, who plays Letty Ortiz in the series, called for the franchise to do better by its female characters in the ninth movie, posting her message on Instagram.

"F8 is out digitally today," she said. "I hope they decide to show some love to the women of the franchise on the next one. Or I just might have to say goodbye to a loved franchise.

"It's been a good ride and I'm grateful for the opportunity, the fans, and studio have provided over the years... One Love."

Fast & Furious 8 – or The Fate of the Furious – has made more than $1.2 billion at the box office worldwide. Two more films are on the way over the next few years, as the series looks to end at number 10.
