Delta flight delay update: Latest as 300 flights cancelled, others delayed

Delta Airlines has lifted its ground stop that kept planes idled for six hours this morning.

Delta said it is resuming some operations following a global computer outage that grounded flights for more than six hours Monday morning.

The ground stop was lifted around 8:40 a.m. EST today but the airlines said some departures would be delayed and others cancelled entirely. Delta blamed the problems on a power outage in its Atlanta hub that impacted its worldwide computer system.

"Customers heading to the airport should expect delays and cancellations. While inquiries are high and wait times are long, our customer service agents are doing everything they can to assist. There may also be some lag time in the display of accurate flight status at delta.com, the Fly Delta App and from Delta representatives on the phone and in airport," the company said.

At 10:40 EST, Delta said it had canceled about 300 flights. Eight hundred of its nearly 6,000 flights were in operation.

The airlines said it has activated its travel waiver program that allows passengers with cancelled or significantly delayed flights to receive a refund or make a ticket change without a fee. Delta says rebooked travel must be for flights no later than Friday.

Delta stopped worldwide departures at around 3 a.m. Eastern. On the same day a year ago, Delta has 290 flights in the air that morning; this morning it had 25.

Delta said it is working to resolve the problems as quickly as possible. The airline operates about 15,000 daily flights, carrying an average of 550,000 daily passengers.

While flight status information is limited, customers can go online to see if their travel is impacted here.
