The legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. - the slain civil rights leader - is celebrated Monday (Jan. 16, 2017).
The holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year, though King's actual birthday is Jan. 15.
Also known as MLK Day, today is a federal holiday, meaning all non-essential federal government offices are closed. Most state, county and city offices are closed as well.

Public transportation- Limited or moderated service in most areas, check with your provider
King was assassinated during an April 4, 1968 visit to Memphis, Tennessee. In 1973, Illinois became the first state to adopt MLK day as a state holiday though it wasn't until 1983 that Congress passed its own national bill creating Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The federal MLK holiday went into effect in 1986. In 2000, Utah became the last state to recognize MLK Day by name, the same year South Carolina became the final state to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a paid holiday for employees.
