Leading charity Rape Crisis has praised Emmerdale for raising awareness of sexual violence in recent scenes which saw Pierce Harris brutally attack his wife Rhona on their wedding night. Emmerdale had worked with the charity as well as Women’s Aid when planning and executing the storyline and, though the scenes were an extremely difficult watch, the storyline is proving an important one to tell.

Rape Crisis told Metro.co.uk that the important factors they look for when programmes seek to cover a difficult topic like rape include the intention to raise awareness, the avoidance of replicating victim blaming stereotypes and the issuing of a clear warning of what the show contains so anyone affected by the subject matter who may find it traumatic can avoid.

Emmerdale publicised the storyline weeks in advance and issued a warning that stated strong words, a shocking assault and distressing scenes lay ahead before the episode started.

When approached by Metro.co.uk, a spokesperson for Rape Crisis said: ‘Last night’s episode was undoubtedly shocking and potentially very distressing, even triggering, for many viewers, particularly those who’ve experienced sexual violence themselves. Sexual violence is much more common in life and relationships than many people realise, so it’s not surprising that programme-makers should want to cover it in dramas that aim to reflect real life.

‘The most important things are that they try to raise awareness and understanding by avoiding replicating victim-blaming myths and stereotypes and, crucially, that they give clear warning, as Emmerdale did yesterday, so that survivors can make an informed choice about whether to watch. Anyone who was affected by yesterday’s Emmerdale can visit rapecrisis.org.uk for details of their nearest specialist support services and other useful information. You are not alone.’

In tonight’s episode, Pierce will try and play down his despicable actions while a courageous Rhona heads to the police station to report her ordeal.
