The next Baltimore police officer scheduled to stand trial in the death of a 25-year-old black man is asking for his case to be dismissed.
Citing court records, The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday that Lt. Brian Rice cited what he says are defects in the prosecution's case. Rice is the highest-ranking officer charged in the case. He's also asking prosecutors to disclose grand jury minutes and testimony.
Freddie Gray died last year after his neck was broken in a police transport van, sparking protests and unrest. Rice is charged with involuntary manslaughter, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office. His trial is set to begin July 5.
Last week, a judge acquitted the van's driver, who had faced the most serious charges, including second-degree murder.
