White House calls ESPN anchor Jemele Hill's anti-Trump tweets a 'fireable offense'

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The White House responded to ESPN anchor Jemele Hill's comments on Twitter in which she called President Trump a "white supremacist."

"I'm not sure he's aware of it," press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during Wednesday's briefing with reporters. "I think that's one of the more outrageous comments anyone could make and certainly something that I think is a fireable offense by ESPN."

While the network distanced itself from the comments and publicly reprimanded Hill for the tweet storm, she hasn't faced any visible discipline. The postings remain on her Twitter profile and, hours after ESPN issued its statement Tuesday calling Hill's comments "inappropriate," she appeared in her usual seat next to Michael Smith on "SportsCenter."

In a back and forth about racism with followers on Monday, Hill wrote, "Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists."

Also, "Trump is the most ignorant, offensive president of my lifetime. His rise is a direct result of white supremacy. Period."

The incident is just the latest fodder for critics who accuse ESPN of a liberal bias they believe has been partly responsible for the network's decline in viewership.
