Girls Outperform Boys Worldwide In Science

Girls Are Dominating Men In Academic Achievement Around The World

Girls are already dominating men in the ghost-busting industry. Now they’re outperforming boys in educational achievement worldwide.

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Missouri and the University of Glasgow studied the educational development levels of 1.5 million 15-year-olds from around the world using data collected from 2000 and 2010. The results showed that girls outperformed boys in 70% of the countries studied, regardless of the level of gender, political economic or social inequality.

According to the study, there were only three regions where boys performed better than girls in reading, science and math: Colombia, Costa Rica and the Indian state Himachal Pradesh. The United States and United Kingdom showed similar levels of achievement for both boys and girls.

Surprisingly, there is a large achievement gap favoring girls in countries with low gender-equality ratings, like Qatar, Jordan and the UAE.

The only exception was found to be in economically developed nations, where high-performing boys outperformed high-achieving girls.

Gijsbert Stoet, researcher in psychology at the University of Glasgow, says that “although it is vital that we promote gender equality in schools, we also need to make sure that we're doing more to understand why these gaps, especially among boys, persist and what other policies we can develop to close them.”
