USA Today chooses a side for the first time ever in a presidential race

The paper's message: Don't vote for Trump

In its 34-year history, USA Today has never taken sides in a presidential race — until now.

In a scathing editorial posted Thursday, USA Today calls Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “a serial liar” who is “unfit for the presidency.”

The board writes, in part:

This year, the choice isn’t between two capable major party nominees who happen to have significant ideological differences. This year, one of the candidates — Republican nominee Donald Trump — is, by unanimous consensus of the Editorial Board, unfit for the presidency.

Trump is erratic, has a checkered business career, and is a “serial liar,” wrote USA Today. He also “lacks the temperament, knowledge, steadiness and honesty that America needs from its presidents,” the board says.

The board stopped short of endorsing Hillary Clinton, but said, “By all means vote, just not for Donald Trump.”
