You already know Dyson for its state-of-the-art vacuums and humidifiers—but now, it's about to become an even bigger household name. Today, the company unveiled its newest project (worth something to the effect of $71 million, NBD) and it has nothing to do with cleaning. The newly announced Dyson Supersonic is its first-ever hair-dryer.

Why, you might reasonably ask, would a vacuum company care that much about your hair? It's simple, according to James Dyson, the company's founder: “Hair-dryers can be heavy, inefficient, and make a racket." And the more obvious: Women really care about their hair. "We realized they can also cause extreme heat damage to hair," he said in a press release. "So I challenged Dyson engineers to really understand the science of hair and develop our version of a hair-dryer, which we think solves these problems.”

At first glance the $399 price tag might make you blow a fuse, but when you compare it other top-quality dryers on the market, it's not far off in price. (The power-packing T3 PROi is $350 and celebrity hairstylist Harry Josh's mint green version is $300 and beloved by many). But still, $400 is a pretty penny to drop on a single purchase alone.

So what do you need to know about it, and more importantly, should you actually buy it when it's available at Sephora this September? We broke down all the nuts and bolts of it to help you decide.

It took four years to develop. And tons of research went into making sure it's worth every dollar. How so? Hundreds of scientists tested over 1,010 miles of human hair—in multiple colors and textures—to confirm that it would work for every single woman picking it up off the shelves.

It has the seal of approval by one of the biggest hairstylists in the biz. Does the name Jen Atkin ring a bell? What about the Kardashians? Atkin works alongside Kim, Khloé, and Kylie—along with other names you might recognize like Chrissy Teigen and Jenna Dewan Tatum—and doesn't just swear by anything. So when she endorses something, we tend to trust that it'll be a game-changer.

It features a ton of bells and whistles. The 1,600-watt dryer is light (1.8 pounds), comes in two colors (fuchsia and white), has a 9-foot cord (so no more having to rearrange your vanity to be right next to a plug); plus, it has a removable filter at the bottom of the dryer, so it's easy to clean and hair doesn't get stuck in it. And it comes with three magnetic attachments that clip on easily: a styling concentrator (the classic attachment you see when getting a blowout), a smoothing nozzle (a longer nozzle that helps ward off frizz), and a diffuser (to help keep curls in tact).

It won't scorch your hands or hair. Nothing is worse than when a dryer is too hot, amirite? This one comes with heat controls that constantly measure how hot the air is getting, so it never overheats—or burns the hell out of your scalp.

And lastly, the best part: It's virtually silent. How they made this miracle happen is incredibly tech-y (acoustic engineers simplified the pathway of the air in the dryer to reduce the rumbling sound the air makes), so we won't bore you too much with the details. Just know that you'll be less likely to wake up your roommates/boyfriend/husband/baby in the morning—and more likely to hear your getting-ready playlist at night. So cue up the 'Yonce.

Finally then the question remains, is it right for you? From what we've seen, it's legit if you're willing to invest the money. But if you want to do some more research, we have this helpful guide that breaks down everything you need to look for in a hair-dryer, based on your needs. Check it out!
