A new Zorro movie in which the heroic masked outlaw steps into a post-apocalyptic future is heading to cinemas, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Titled Zorro Reborn, the film hopes to shoot as early as March 2016 on location in the Dominican Republic, where UK-based Pinewood Studios maintains a facility. The new Zorro will be much the same as the hero created by New York pulp writer Johnston McCulley in 1919, who was sworn to defend farmers and peasants against evil officialdom in early 19th century Spanish-owned California. But the film is instead set in the near future.
“This has been a 15-year journey filled with ups and downs, but it has remained my passion project over the years,” producer Mark Amin told the Hollywood Reporter. Amin’s Sobrini Films is partnering with Lantica Media on the project, with the latter firm’s CEO Antonio Gennari telling the trade bible: “Every generation has its own Zorro hero and we’re proud to be able to introduce a new Zorro to this generation.”
Zorro, originally a Californio nobleman of Spanish and Native American descent otherwise known as Don Diego de la Vega, has featured in more than 40 films including a pair of popular 1920s silent features starring Douglas Fairbanks in the lead. More recently, twin Antonio Banderas efforts The Mask of Zorro (1998) and The Legend of Zorro (2005) made it to multiplexes.
The Zorro Reborn movie was previously set up at studio 20th Century Fox, with Mexican actor Gael García Bernal in the lead, but there are no casting details for the new iteration.
