Fertility experts have found a way to reverse menopause, according to results from a new treatment.

The new discovery offers hope to millions of women who are unable to get pregnant.

After scientists gave 30 women a new treatment, around 2/3 of them began to produce eggs again, Greek researchers told New Scientist.

Dr. Konstantinos Sfakianoudia, a gynecologist at a Greek fertility clinic Genesis, Athens said, "It offers a window of hope that menopausal women may be able to get pregnant using their own genetic material."

However, British experts have warned that having babies at a later age could pose health risks.

When developing the treatment, Dr. Sfakianoudis and his team turned to a blood treatment typically used to help wounds heal faster. It involves creating a platelet-rich plasma by centrifuging the patient's blood to isolate molecules that are responsible for the growth of tissues and blood vessels.

These platelet-rich plasmas are then injected into the ovaries of menopausal women.

The treatment saw success among the majority of patients, including one woman who had her first period in five years.

However, despite the achievement, the team behind the treatment have said they are unable to comment on how long the reversal lasts and exactly why the process works.
