Detectives have questioned a woman on suspicion of faking her own death so her family could claim a £140,000 life insurance payout.

The woman's son and his guardian claimed she had died in a car crash in Zanzibar and allegedly provided fake documents including a death certificate and accident reports.

The insurance company was unable to verify the woman's death and refused to pay out on the policy.

Instead, it called in police over its suspicions about the documents.

The son, aged 19, was arrested and admitted that his mother was living in Canada.

The woman was questioned after voluntarily returning from Canada and meeting detectives in Birmingham.

The son's guardian was also arrested in an investigation by the City of London Police's Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department.

The woman and the two men have been released on bail until April.
