An email released Monday by the State Department shows that just days before the 2012 election Hillary Clinton encouraged her longtime friend Sidney Blumenthal to carry on with a project that involved music legend Cher attacking Republicans and GOP nominee Mitt Romney over “Republican rape rage”
“I am working very closely now with American Bridge,” Blumenthal informed Clinton in an Oct. 26, 2012 email, referring to the Democratic research organization founded by Clinton crony David Brock.
“I dictated a script for Cher for an ad on women, will learn whether she agreed to do it; ordered a reel on Republican outrageous comments on women, which is done and will soon be released; number of other things TBD later, whatever I can think of,” Blumenthal added.
He also asserted that Vice President Joe Biden “needs to raise his decibel level on Republican rape rage” by calling out Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney as a “supporter, enabler and Profile in Cowardice.”
Blumenthal, a former reporter who worked in the Bill Clinton White House, also requested that the then-secretary of state pressure Democratic women senators to help with the project.
“Can you get all the Democratic women senators to issue a joint statement about the Republican rape rage, women’s rights and Romney’s enabling and cowardice?” Blumenthal asked Clinton. “This fire needs gas.”
Clinton appeared to support Blumenthal’s effort, though it is unclear whether she contacted female senators to help.
“Keep fighting the good fight!” she wrote. “Agree w your strategy. I will also tell Bill.”
Blumenthal seems to have completed the project. Cher and comedian Kathy Griffin appeared in an ad attacking various Republicans for their comments pertaining to abortion in cases of sexual assault.
The video included a clip from an Indiana Senate debate in which Republican candidate Richard Mourdock said that “even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, it is something that God intended.”
“Honestly, this is sick stuff,” Cher said in the ad. “Richard Mourdock thinks pregnancy resulting from rape is a gift from God. Do you want this guy in the Senate?”
The ad was paid for by the Jewish Council for Education and Research, which partnered with American Bridge during the 2012 election.
