LONDON, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Tough new rules which mean cigarettes and other tobacco products must be sold in plain green packets and feature prominently came into force in Britain on Sunday, the BBC reported.

As part of efforts to smear the image of smoking, the new compulsory standardized packaging must carry the new, larger, health warnings on two-thirds of the front and back of any packet.

The rules will also end the sale of packets of ten, ban "misleading" information -- "low tar" or "organic", for example -- and force companies to display health warnings on 65 percent of the front and back of the packet.

Similar restrictions will apply to e-cigarettes and packets of rolling tobacco too.

The country-wide move could lead to 300,000 fewer smokers in the UK over the next year, estimated the Cochrane Review team, which is led by researchers from London and Oxford

A reduction in the appeal of cigarette packs due to plain packaging laws outweighed other tobacco control measures, the researchers said.

Currently, around 17 percent of the UK adult population are smokers.

Anti-smoking campaigners have welcomed the changes, dismissing concerns from smokers that the changes are too intrusive.
