Co-ed swimming restrictions cause rift in N.J. adult community, report says

LAKEWOOD -- Men and women can only swim together at certain times of day in a Lakewood adult community, according to a report on APP.com.

Residents of a Lakewood adult community are engaged in a dispute over co-ed swimming at the community pool.

Most of the residents at A Country Place are Orthodox Jewish, which led to a change in the rules at the outdoor swimming pool in the 376-home community, the report said.

Men and women are only allowed in the pool together from 1 to 3 p.m. weekdays as well as all day Saturday.

Orthodox Jews don't allow men and women to swim together.

Of the 91 hours a week the pool is open, 66 hours (or 73 percent) are only for swimmers of one gender, the report said.

At least two non-Jewish residents have been fined $50 each after refusing to get out of the pool when co-ed swimming hours ended. Neither plans to pay.
