House Speaker Paul Ryan applauded the Tomahawk missile strikes against Syria Thursday evening, calling the military action “appropriate and just.”

“Earlier this week the Assad regime murdered dozens of innocent men, women, and children in a barbaric chemical weapons attack. Tonight the United States responded,” Paul Ryan said in a statement. “This action was appropriate and just.”

President Donald Trump ordered two U.S. destroyers stationed in the eastern Mediterranean Sea to fire approximately 50 Tomahawk missiles at the al-Shayrat military base in Syria, from where the regime planes that launched the destructive chemical weapons attack Tuesday in Idlib were believed to have taken off.

“These tactical strikes make clear that the Assad regime can no longer count on American inaction as it carries out atrocities against the Syrian people,” Ryan continued. “Resolving the years-long crisis in Syria is a complex task, but Bashar al-Assad must be held accountable and his enablers must be persuaded to change course. I look forward to the administration further engaging Congress in this effort.”

The Pentagon said Thursday it notified the Russians before conducting the strike and took care to avoid targeting the section of the al-Shayrat where the Russians are stationed.
