Three fire engines and crews - two from St Annes and one from South Shore - were called to Southbank Avenue after smoke was seen pouring out a kitchen window shortly after 2pm.

"A tumble dryer was on fire and two dogs in the house were given oxygen therapy by firefighters, who used a hosereel jet to extinguish the fire," a spokesman said.

"There were no other casualties."
