Suspect named in Charlottesville car incident that killed 1, injured dozens

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - The man who is believed to have driven a gray Dodge Challenger into a crowd of anti-racist protesters at the "Unite the Right" event in Charlottesville, Virginia, Saturday afternoon has been tentatively identified as 20-year-old James Alex Fields, Jr., of Ohio, according to CNN.

Fields, who last lived in Maumee, Ohio, has has been charged with suspicion of second-degree murder, hit-and-run, malicious wounding, and failure to stop for an accident involving a death, according to The Washington Post.

A Huffington Post reporter released a mug shot alleged to be Fields that was sent to him from the Albermale County Jail.

Multiple sources have reported that Fields formerly served in the military and is a registered Republican.

Authorities believe Fields drove the Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people near the intersection of Water Street and 4th Street Saturday.

A 32-year-old woman was killed and at least 19 other people were injured as a result of the incident.

The University of Virginia Health System, the medical center where those injured Saturday are being treated, said that five of the patients are currently in critical condition.

The violent incident was captured by multiple people present at the scene, including by Brennan Gilmore--a former U.S. Foreign Service officer and political operative who released video of the incident on Twitter.
