Veteran British star and American actor will join Copenhagen-set ensemble piece linking eight interwoven stories

Christopher Lee and Uma Thurman are among the star names set to join The 11th, a new drama about the lead-up to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on America – which is intriguingly set in Denmark.

Screen Daily reports the ensemble piece will be made up of eight interwoven stories, all taking place in Copenhagen. Thurman plays an obsessive police officer, while Lee has been cast as a former eminent surgeon with a drink problem who is also suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Other castmembers include Sweden’s Michael Nyqist (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), who plays Lee’s son and carer, Connie Nielsen, Lena Olin, Lars Mikkelsen and Paprika Steen.

So far the nature of the links between events in Denmark and those more than 3,800 miles away at the World Trade Center in Manhattan remains unclear. The casting of Lee once again suggests that reports of the 92-year-old genre icon’s retirement have been greatly exaggerated: the British horror stalwart also took the lead role in last year’s little-seen Angels in Notting Hill and appeared as wizard Saruman in two of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit movies, albeit via green screen from London as he was considered too elderly to fly to New Zealand.

The 11th, which is being touted to potential investors at the current Cannes film festival, will be directed by Paris-based screenwriter Xavier Nemo in his first stint in charge of the cameras. The €5m project is due to shoot in the autumn, with the film-makers aiming for a September 2016 release date in line with the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
