Dynamic Sculptures Capture Powerful Combination of Emotion and Movement

Sculptures by Gaylord Ho

The dynamic work of sculptor Gaylord Ho is instantly recognizable. Emotion oozes from the figures, as they throw their energy into dancerly poses. His female figures twist and twirl, animated and vital.

Born in Taiwan, the 66-year-old artist has a fascinating personal history. Growing up as the son of low income farmers, Ho was expected to balance his studies while helping on the rice farm. He later went on to study at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts with the support of his family. After graduating and completing his two-year mandatory military obligation, Ho set about his career as a sculptor.

It's a career that has brought many accolades, including the prestige of presenting a work to Pope Benedict XVI. Ho specializes in limited edition sculptures produced both in bronze and Parian II—a medium he formulated to give the polished appearance of marble.

The influence of classical sculpture on Ho's work is readily evident, especially when sculpted in Parian II. The silky white surface combines the classicism of Greek sculpture with the dynamism of Giambologna‘s late-Renaissance bronze statuettes.

“The goal of my personal art is to capture the best of the human emotions…love, compassion, nurturing, devotion…I see those emotions wherever in the world that I travel. I see them on the faces of old men and young women, mothers and daughters in all nations,” Ho shares. “My art is about capturing the emotion of a particular moment in time in a way that conveys that emotion to the viewer of the art.”

Limited edition sculptures by Gaylord Ho are available in a wide variety of galleries in the United States, including Georgia, Arizona, Hawaii, and Oregon.

The dynamic and expressive sculptures of Gaylord Ho are influenced by classical art.
