Eighteen years and three PlayStations later, Final Fantasy VII is getting a remake. A real one. For PlayStation 4, with other platforms to follow.

Square Enix announced the news during Sony’s press conference at E3 tonight, following a day full of rumors. “Play it first on PlayStation,” read the trailer, implying that it’ll be out for PC and Xbox One too.

RPG fans have been clamoring for a remake of Final Fantasy VII since... well, since the release of Final Fantasy VII. It’s become something of a longrunning joke, with Square Enix coming up with new dodges and excuses any time anyone asked why it hadn’t happened yet... so this is surreal, to say the least.

No release date yet, but you can watch the trailer here:

Guess that PC port ain’t happening?

UPDATE (11:34pm): Square Enix just sent out an official press release, announcing that they’ve “begun production” on the remake. Sounds like this ain’t coming for a long time.
