Maurice White, co-founder of the legendary band, Earth, Wind & Fire, has passed away at the age of 74. He passed in his sleep on Thursday morning in Los Angeles after a battle with Parkinson's disease.

Earth, Wind & Fire was responsible for classic hits such as "Boogie Wonderland,""Shining Star," and "September." White was inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 2010; his band was also previously inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

Earth, Wind & Fire is a major influence in modern hip-hop and R&B. Some artists who have sampled the band's music include Jay Z, Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Nas, and Young Thug, among many others.

The Recording Academy shared a statement on the passing of White. "We are very saddened to learn of the passing of seven-time Grammy Award winner Maurice White." They go on to offer condolences, as well as mentioning that his band will receive an incredible award at this year's ceremonies, "A founding member and leader of Earth, Wind & Fire, who are receiving our Lifetime Achievement Award this year, Maurice was the guiding force behind the group’s success and helped create hit songs such as "Shining Star," "September," "After The Love Has Gone," and so many memorable others."
