What Was That Commotion at the Arlington McDonald’s?

We get a lot of news tips at NBC 5. Some pan out and some don't -- as was the case Friday night.

NBCDFW staffer Frank Heinz, a new father on paternity leave, was on his way to get dinner for himself and his wife when he spotted police activity at the McDonald's on Southwest Green Oaks Boulevard.

He slowed down, took a picture and sent in the tip that more than a half dozen Arlington police units had surrounded McDonald's and Air One was overhead.

Because he's a reporter at heart, he tuned in to scanners, which made it sound like there might be an attempted abduction and there was a victim in the bathroom of the restaurant.

None of the information was confirmed, and NBC 5 doesn't run with scanner chatter, so our assignment desk called Arlington police to find out what was going on.

Arlington police said it was a welfare concern call and that a man and woman from North Carolina, who had just met, had decided to take a road trip.

The woman got "cold feet" and hid in the restroom, called 911 and waited for officers to arrive, according to police. The woman's 911 call was routed to Dallas police, so DPD officers were also on the scene.
