THE Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has recorded fewer fire incidents in Cebu province from January to March this year as compared to the same period last year.

Chief Insp. Ronaldo Orbeta, acting Cebu provincial fire marshal, said the number of fire incidents in the province decreased from 156 in the first quarter of last year to 145 this year.

Orbeta, however, said that the reported total cost of damage had a slight increase from last year’s reported P21.5 million in damage to P22.8 million this quarter.

According to BFP records, Mandaue City had the most number of fire incidents with 8; followed by Carcar City with 7; Danao City, Consolacion town, and Talisay City each had 3 fire incidents; Naga and Minglanilla had 2 while Toledo and Bogo had one each.

Records also show that the leading cause of fire was faulty electrical connections. The other causes of fire include improper disposal of cigarette butts, unattended cooking stoves and negligent use of matches and lighters.

“Kaning atong fire cause na electrical connections, dako kaayo siya ug natampo sa fire causes sa fire incidents, mostly pud residential,” Orbeta said.

“So the Bureau of Fire Prevention is trying to focus on structural and environmental settings. That’s why we will be conducting fire safety lectures,” he added.
