The 39-year-old Oscar nominee and Sherlock star had years ago sparked a meme on social media, namely on Tumblr, in which he is compared to an otter. So, naturally, when it came time to poke fun at himself on The Graham Norton Show on Friday, he stepped up to the challenge with full enthusiasm.
And it gets better: He did it with the help of Johnny Depp. The two star in the crime drama Black Mass, in which Depp plays mobster James "Whitey" Bulger and Cumberbatch plays his brother, Billy. The movie was released in the United States in September and in the United Kingdom earlier this week.
"Are you aware of this, Johnny Depp? When Benedict became famous, one of the first things that happened was—this is so random—his fans decided that he looked very like an otter," Graham Norton said on the show. "Are you aware of this?"
"I'm sorry?" replied Depp, 52, drawing laughs.
After Norton showed some examples of side-by-side photos, the actor added, "May I say one thing? Someone has a lot of time on their hands."
And since the three had some time on their hands during the program, they then proceeded to imitate expressions of otters shown in other pics.
The results? Spectacular.
Seriously, better than fans could have imagined. Cumberbatch just...becomes the otter.
Depp and Norton later join in and the former gives Cumberbatch a little smooch!
