Hacksaw Ridge trailer: Andrew Garfield goes to war without a gun

During World War II, an army medic named Desmond Doss went to war, enlisting but refusing to carry a weapon because he believed that killing another human being was immoral. Even though he entered the battlefield without a gun, he still managed to save 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa, one of the bloodiest of the entire war, and he eventually became the first conscientious objector to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Now, director Mel Gibson is bringing Doss’ story to the big screen, with Andrew Garfield starring as the only American soldier to serve on the front lines without a weapon.

The first trailer for Hacksaw Ridge introduces Garfield as Doss, chronicling his path from enlistment to Okinawa.

“With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don’t seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together,” he says in the trailer.

Hacksaw Ridge marks Gibson’s first time in the directing chair in 10 years, as he hasn’t directed a film since 2006’s Apocalypto. In addition to Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge also stars Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer, Hugo Weaving, Rachel Griffiths, and Vince Vaughn.

Hacksaw Ridge will hit theaters on Nov. 4.
