Tom Wright was named one of five "Guardians of the Rider" award winners for his efforts in protecting New Jersey bikers.

TRENTON -- A Florence resident was one of five people across the country to be granted Allstate's "Guardians of the Ride" award recently at the New Jersey Statehouse in Trenton.

Tom Wright, president of the Central Jersey Rider Training, said he was honored to be recognized for his work in protecting New Jersey motorcyclists.

"It's invaluable to me," Wright said. "I push for motorcycle safety at every opportunity that I have. This one has a little more credibility to my message. If you ask me to talk to motorcycles or safety, I can go on for a long time."

As president of the Central Jersey Rider Training, Wright has helped teach New Jersey bikers learn skills needed to remain safe on the roads.

Wright, who rides a BMW R1200 GS Adventure, said he monitors legislation and contributes and advocates for the motorcyclists.

"I keep an eye on legislation, and if there's anything brought to my attention, I'll go and comment on it," Wright said.

Wright, who worked with the state Motor Vehicle Commission for 30 years, said he's a big proponent of motorcyclists having the ability to choose to be safer instead of being forced to wear protective gear -- except for helmets, which he said are absolutely necessary.

Wright hopes more bikers practice their skills whether it be through classes or on their own, to ensure their safety on the road.

"If you're going to take up motor riding, you should investigate the options and choose someone with experience to give you the baseline of skills that people should start out with," Wright said.
