Police have named a 22-year-old man shot dead in what detectives believe could have been a targeted attack.
Jordan Thomas, from the Waterthorpe area of Sheffield, suffered fatal injuries when he was shot in a car in the city centre on Sunday night.
A 27-year-old man was seriously injured in the attack and is in a stable condition in hospital.
A postmortem examination revealed that Thomas died as a result of gunshot wounds.
The two men were in a silver Ford Mondeo, which had stopped at traffic lights on the A61 Derek Dooley Way, when they were attacked from the passenger side at about 10.15pm. Thomas was a passenger in the car.
DCI Phil Etheridge, who is leading the investigation, said: “From the information we currently have, we believe there is a possibility this was a targeted attack against the two victims. However, it is too early in the investigation to confirm at this stage.
“Inquiries are ongoing at this time and officers will remain in the area today to provide reassurance to people living in and visiting Sheffield.
“I’d like to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone who has information, to please come forward and contact police.”
No one has been arrested and detectives are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or with any information, to contact South Yorkshire police.
On Tuesday, Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader and MP for Sheffield Hallam, described the shooting as a tragedy. He tweeted: “Shocked to hear what happened in Sheffield. Any loss of life is a tragedy. I hope those with info will do all they can to help the police.”
