New Bubble Wrap Won't Pop

Trending News: Sorry World, Bubble Wrap Is No Longer Going To Be Poppable

Why Is This Important

Because this is the end of one of life's simplest joys.

Long Story Short

The manufacturers of the original Bubble Wrap, Sealed Air (yes that's really their name) have announced that their new product "iBubble Wrap" will save space — but will not pop.

Long Story

Bubble Wrap as you knew it is gone forever. Well, at least from its original manufacturer, Sealed AIr Corp. who recently announced that their new product "iBubble Wrap" will not be poppable, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Sealed Air invented Bubble Wrap in 1957, but lost the patent in 1981. With the market open to imitators, the company lost a sizeable chunk of its business, in part because it was unable to ship its Bubble Wrap product more than 150 miles due to the bulkiness of the giant, pre-inflated rolls.

The advantage of the new iBubble Wrap (as a sidenote: someone should tell Sealed Air that adding "i" before a product name is so early 2000s) is that it takes up one-fiftieth of the space the old wrap did. Rather than being pre-inflated, it is sold in flat sheets that the shipper inflates themselves before use.

The supreme disadvantage for consumers receiving iBubble-Wrap-packed packages however is, of course, that you will no longer be able to do this:

Bubble Wrap

Or this:

Bubble Wrap

Or if you were really serious about it, this:

Ah, well. It's just another one of the analog world's tactile joys that you'll brag about as an old man to your grandkids: "When I was young, there was this wonderful poppable plastic paper..."
